    This painting of American flags on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is by one of the most prominent American Impressionists of the early 20th century, Frederick Childe Hassam (known to many as Childe Hassam). The painting depicts both flags hanging on Fifth Avenue as well as reflections of the flags in water following a rainstorm. The Avenue in the Rain is one of 30 flag paintings of his that coincided with World War I. Fifth Avenue in New York City was frequently decorated with American flags at the time, as the United States debated entry into the war. This piece was completed in February of 1917, barely two months before Congress declared war on Germany on April 6th. Six Hassam pieces are in the White House Collection.

    This oil painting of a scene on the Hudson River is by Shepard Alonzo Mount. A large, rocky island sits in the center of the canvas. The rock face is shadowed in the morning light. In the center foreground, two American Indian figures appear, with the man standing and holding a bow next to a woman in a red dress, seated on the ground. Mount began his career as a carriage maker before enrolling at the National Academy of Design. Though he is best known for portraiture, he enjoyed painting landscapes. He is the older brother of acclaimed artist and Hudson River School contemporary William Sidney Mount.

    This painting was done by British-born artist Robert Havell, Jr. The painting depicts the buildings of the West Point military academy from across the Hudson River. Several boats ply the water in the center of the painting, while in the lower left corner a woman carries a basket and follows two cows walking down a dirt road. Havell is considered part of the Hudson River School and he best known as being the primary engraver for John James Audubon's Birds of America (1827-38), which brought him from Britain to the United States.

    This oil painting of Lake George in New York is attributed to Andrew Andrews. When this painting was first acquired for the White House, it was believed that it was created by Ambrose Andrews, an active painter in New York City. However, he rarely painted landscapes. More recently, this painting has been attributed to Andrew Andrews, who taught landscape painting in Buffalo, New York. The oval shape of the canvas makes the work distinctive, and the painting itself is warm with setting sunlight illuminating the trees, the lake itself, and a man depicted as sitting on a rock and sketching the view. This painting was acquired for the White House Collection by the White House Historical Association in 1975.

Mohonk Lake is a small lake in Marbletown, Ulster County, New York near the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Hart was born in Britain but moved to the United States as a child. He began his career painting portraits but found more success with landscape painting. This painting was acquired for the White House Collection by the White House Historical Association in 1976.

    This painting by Carl Calusd (sometimes credited as Charles Calusd) is a seascape and cityscape of the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of welcome for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. This Impressionist-style piece shows the Statue of Liberty set against the backdrop of lower Manhattan, with ships large and small around her in the water. Calusd was known for maritime paintings. The painting was a gift presented to the White House in 1909 by Hayozoun Hohannes Topakyan of the Persian consul in New York.

The left half of the painting shows New York Harbor and the Hudson River full of ships - tugboats, freighters, and barges full of commerce and commercial goods. In contrast, the right half is Battery Park, full of families and friends leisurely strolling and enjoying the beautiful day. Melrose was born in Scotland and immigrated to the United States in the 1850s. He was known for landscapes, including several of New York City and the Hudson River.
